Who We Are

Our Passion...

Zen Acres is a small retreat located just outside of Estacada, OR near Metzler County Park.  We offer spacious private campsites for individual campers, families, and small groups.  We are a work in progress, with a long term vision of hosting groups who wish to reserve the entire camping area for spiritual retreats,  family reunions, outdoor programs, small weddings, and similar events.

Currently we offer individual bookings through our web site.  Starting in the 2025 camping season we are opening to groups who wish to rent the entire campground for the weekend, or longer periods of time (up to 75 people and no more than 40 cars).

Creeks & Waterfalls

Clear Creek is a substantial year-round creek that runs through the camping area with easy creek access a very short walk from each campsite.

Location, Location, Locaion

We are located in an a hub of outdoor recreational activities, including hiking, fishing, boating, mountain bike riding, and much more.

Spacious Sites

Our camp sites are oversized and carefully planned to maximize privacy; much larger and more well spaced than what you find at most public campgrounds.

Common Questions

Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Do you allow campfires?

Almost always.  As a private campground we are able to have fires when public campgrounds do not allow them.  In fact it has been several years since we have had a fire ban that applied to us (for recreational fires).  We also have the advantage of being set deep in a canyon and near a creek.  That means that our soil moisture content is typically far higher than most areas, even in the hottest part of summer.

That said, we do take fire safety very seriously.  We provide fire extinguishers throughout the camping area.  In the driest part of the year, I monitor conditions, and may institute a fire ban if conditions warrant it.  So though I cannot guarantee there will not be a last minute fire ban, I can say that it did NOT happen last year (2024).

How big/deep is the creek?

That really depends on the time of the year.  Clear creek is a substantial year-round creek.  In late spring/early summer, there are many areas chest/shoulder deep, and a couple spots where it may be a little deeper.  Even in the driest part of the year an adult can typically get nearly waste deep, and sit/lay down to get fully submerged to cool off.

Is There Fishing In The Creek?

The short answer is yes, you can fish, but you won’t find many keepers.  Because the creek is primarily for swimming, wading, and exploring, we ask that anyone who fishes on site, does so downstream about 200’ from the main creek access location, and we have a zero-tolerance policy for any line, or tackle being left in the creek.  Leave no trace, please!

For excellent fishing:  About 5 miles away is Milo McIver State Park which sits on the Clackamas River, and offers both deep water (above the dam), and shallow water and/or fly fishing (below the dam).  Within 12 miles there are countless spots along the Clackamas River, including the North Fork Reservoir and Promontory Park and boat launch.

Can I bring my camper?

Absolutely!  Though we don’t have official “RV sites” with hookups, pull throughs, or perfectly level pads, most of our sites can accommodate a boondocking camper or trailer.  Each site has unique characteristics with pros/cons for various types of camping and camper desires.  Some sites are more secluded and set back from the road, others have more level parking areas, may be easier to get a camper into, and/or may require less leveling.  So depending on size, type, and experience/skill level of the driver, you may consider one site over another.  For more info on these “pros/cons” see the Site Selection Guide.  One more thing to consider if bringing a camper is the road down to the camping area.  See below FAQ “What is the road into the camp area like?” for more details.

What is the road into the camp area like?

You will turn off the paved road onto a gravel road, then almost immediately pass our home.  From there, the road down to the camping area is about ¼” mile, one lane gravel road.  It is steep in parts, with turnouts along the way (should you encounter a vehicle coming the other direction.  We keep a good vertical corridor clipped back for taller rigs, so you shouldn’t have many issues with brushing up against limbs and leaves.

For those pulling campers:  My family has been pulling campers, trailers, and motorhomes up and down the road for the last 20 years.  On a few occasions, this has included a maximum size (39 ½’ park model trailer with a double pullout), which is doable but certainly not easy.  However, different people have different experience and expectations, so I stay a little conservative when suggesting what other people will find easy.  I would suggest to about 25’ should be relatively easy, and up to about 33’ fine for a reasonably a confident/experienced driver.  Though I would and have pulled something bigger than that, I wouldn’t recommend it for any but a very confident and experienced driver.  Finally, given that it is a steep gravel road, I would recommend 4WD for any towed trailer or heavy rig.

2025 Note:  We plan to do quite a bit of improvement work to the road in the summer of 2025.  If you camp mid-week, you may find us actively working on portions of the road.  This may result in temporary road closures.  We will conduct our work in a way that can allow a camper to pass within 10-15 minutes, but we want mid week campers to know the possibility of short delays.  We typically schedule this type of work on days when there are no campers on site, but often that is impossible, and we may conduct some road work when a camper or two are on site.  If/when we do, we will maintain good communication, and do everything we can to minimize any delays or impact on our campers.

Great camping weekend, site was just as advertised. We had more than enough space and even with a larger group just a few sites down from ours we never saw another camper outside of check in and the only sounds were from the creek and the wind. Perfect raw camping!

A really great campground. Quiet, gorgeous forest and creek. Lovely clean sites and porta potties. We are definitely telling our friends about this spot, only 45 mins from Portland. It's not a place for a reunion kegger or a lot of barking dogs. It suits a more chill camping style. Really a beautiful spot that we highly recommend. The name says it all. Zen Acres.

I absolutely loved camping at Zen acres. I love that Mike the host came and checked us in personally and made sure we had what we needed. We were in spot one and it was very spacious and beautiful quick walk to the bathroom. And a lovely walk down to the creek Overall we had such an amazing time. We ran firewood that we brought, and it was great because we were able to purchase bundles at kiosk. ! We would absolutely love to come again!
